Texting Behind the Wheel is Like Driving Blind

Drivers are 23 times more likely to crash if they use a cell phone or portable electronic device for texting while driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In a famous 2010 experiment, Car and Driver magazine conducted safety tests at an abandoned airstrip. The researchers found that texting diverts a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. This is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field blindfolded at 55 mph.

Yet more than a third of all drivers (37 percent) say they have sent or received text messages while driving, according to a Healthday poll. Eighteen percent say they do it regularly.

Other texting statistics:

  • 800,000 drivers across the country are texting at any given moment.
  • Texting is six times more likely to cause a wreck than driving drunk.
  • The level of impairment while texting is the same as consuming four beers.
  • Nearly 25 percent of all car wrecks in 2011 involved a cell phone.
  • Texting slows your brake reaction speed by 18 percent.
  • Simply reaching for the cell phone doubles your risk of a crash.
  • Texting quadruples the time your eyes are not on the road.

New York Texting Deaths and Teen Drivers

A study by the American Automobile Association found that 46 percent of teens admit to driving while texting. Most do so even while acknowledging that it distracts from the task of driving.

The website Texting and Driving Safety has even coined a new phrase, “Driving While Intoxicated,” to describe the deadly trend.

New York State’s distracted driving laws were toughened in 2010. According to the laws:

  • Text messaging and related uses of handheld electronic devices are banned.
  • Drivers must use hands-free devices while talking on cell phones.
  • Taxicab drivers in New York City are banned from using cell phones.

From July 2011 to February 2012, there were almost 120,000 electronic distracted driving tickets issued by New York State law enforcement officers. Text messaging violations — with 7,495 tickets — saw the most significant increase.

People who are seriously injured in a New York texting-while-driving car crash may be entitled to bring an automobile injury lawsuit to recover monetary damages for:

  • Doctor and hospital bills
  • Prescription drugs
  • Repair or replacement of vehicle
  • Lost wages
  • Future lost income
  • Permanent or total disability
  • Pain and suffering
  • Wrongful death
