Car accidents are quite common in the Bronx. According to the New York Police Department, there are about 1,500 motor vehicle accidents every month in the city’s northernmost borough. These accidents result in hundreds of injuries and many preventable deaths. The New York Health Department that nearly 900 Bronx residents are treated in emergency rooms every month because of traffic accidents.
Common Causes of Car Accidents in the Bronx
Some of the most common causes of car accidents in the Bronx include:
- Impaired driving – Motorists who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol typically have dulled senses and reflexes, suffer from poor judgment, and are more likely to take risks. These factors make impaired driving incredibly dangerous to anyone around.
- Distracted driving – A driver who is texting, programming a GPS, eating, grooming themselves, or otherwise distracted is much more likely to cause a crash because their attention is not on the road ahead.
- Drowsy driving – Motorists who work late shifts or have unusual work schedules, are under the influence of certain prescription medications, or are otherwise fatigued are more likely to cause an accident because they have dulled reflexes and may even fall asleep while driving.
- Speeding – Speeding can be incredibly dangerous because it makes it harder for drivers to maneuver and control their vehicles. Also, coming to a complete stop requires more time and distance.
- Aggressive driving – Aggressive driving like weaving in and out of traffic lanes, cutting off other drivers, failing to use turn signals, making unsafe turns, and failing to yield the right-of-way increases the chances of an accident.
- Following too closely – The closer a vehicle is to the one in front of it, the less time its driver has to react to any sudden changes in speed.
- Mechanical defects – Sometimes, car accidents are caused by defective or malfunctioning auto parts. In these cases, the company that made the faulty part could be liable for an accident.
- Bad weather – Drivers should take precautions in bad weather, such as rain, snow, or fog.
What Compensation Is Available to Car Accident Victims in Bronx, NY
The compensation you can pursue after a car accident depends on the extent of your injuries and the circumstances of the crash. New York has a “no-fault” car insurance system, which means all motorists who live in the state must carry no-fault insurance, also known as personal injury protection (PIP) insurance. However, PIP benefits do not cover property damage or personal losses, such as pain and suffering.

Under New York law, “severe injuries” include:
- Bone fractures

- Any injury that prevents you from performing your usual activities for at least 90 days within the six months following the crash
