NYC Knee, Ankle & Foot Injuries After Slip and Fall Accidents

In Need of a Foot, Knee, or ankle Injury Lawyer in New York City?

The leg contains some of the longest and the smallest bones in the human body. In the feet, knees and ankles, there are at least 60 bones that may be injured in a car accident. There are also numerous muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and other soft tissue that are all prone to car accident injuries.

The knee contains the largest and most complicated joint. It is critical because it is responsible for connecting the two largest bones in the body – the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia (shin bone). Within each foot there are 26 smaller bones, each one of which is susceptible to injury in a car accident.

Injuries to the foot, knee and ankle are fairly common in car accidents due in large part to the positioning of an occupant’s leg when a crash occurs.  Front seat occupants typically have their legs and feet under the dash of the vehicle. Drivers usually have their knees mere inches from the steering wheel and their feet and ankles near the gas and brake pedals. In a collision, this often means that a front seat occupant’s leg will buckle as it impacts the dash. The stronger the force of the crash, the more force that is exerted on the legs, knees and ankles as they impact hard surfaces in the car.

The smaller bones located within the foot and ankle can easily fracture because of their small size. The bones located in the knee, although much larger, are under constant pressure in daily life, often making them vulnerable to injury and painful when healing. The tendons, muscles, and ligaments in the lower extremities can also be injured as a result of the stress put on them in a crash.

A driver or passenger who has even a split second warning prior to a collision will often stretch out his or her hands and feet in a reflexive attempt to brace for the impending crash. Unfortunately, this reflex can actually worsen injuries to a victim’s feet, knees and ankles.

Types of Foot, Knee & Ankle Injuries in NYC Car Accidents

Among the more common types of injuries that your foot, knee, or ankle may sustain in a New York car accident are:

  • Dashboard knee – Because of the frequency of knee injuries in car accidents, an injury that is the result of an impact with the dash has been termed “dashboard knee.” It essentially includes any injury to the knee that stems from an impact with the dash or other hard structures in the car.
  • Fractures — “Fracture” is simply the medical term for a broken bone. Fractures can be displaced or non-displaced, as well as open or closed. A displaced fracture is one in which the bone has broken and the pieces have moved so that they are no longer properly aligned. A non-displaced fracture is one in which the bone has cracked or broken but remains in alignment. An open fracture is one in which the bone has broken through the skin, while a closed fracture may show no visible outward evidence of the fracture. A compound fracture involves many breaks.
  • Strains and sprains – A sprain is an injury that involves the stretching or tearing of ligaments, while a strain involves the stretching or tearing of muscles or tendons.
