People who ride motorcycles know that any accident can have catastrophic results. Even when cyclists ride carefully, obey traffic laws and use protective equipment, they can be seriously injured or killed when they collide with a car or truck. The injuries they suffer are often very serious because motorcycles provide very little protection in a crash. Head or brain trauma and disabling leg and foot injuries are among the serious injuries that motorcyclists suffer.

Motorcyclists are far more vulnerable in collisions than passengers in larger cars, trucks and buses, and motorcyclists suffer a higher percentage of injuries or deaths than other motorists. In 2007, there were more than 100,000 injuries in motorcycle accidents and more than 5,000 fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In New York City alone, there were 1,359 motorcycle accidents in 2007, resulting in 1,122 injuries and 36 fatalities.
In most cases, motorcycle accidents are caused by other drivers, not the motorcyclist. Often other motorists fail to see the motorcycle rider. This can result in a truck or car turning directly in front of the motorcycle, running a traffic signal or stop sign and causing a collision, pulling into an intersection in front of a biker, or forcing a bike off the road or into other traffic. Over 13 percent of New York's 2007 motorcycle accidents involved driver inattention. An additional 16.5 percent involved failure to yield the right of way.
Common motorcyclist injuries from an accident include damage to the lower extremities, especially broken leg and foot bones. Those lower-extremity injuries can be extremely costly. According to an August 2008 federal study, motorcyclists with a single leg or foot injury had a median hospital bill of $20,745 -- and that jumped to $38,608 when motorcyclists had multiple lower-extremity injuries. Motorcyclists who had leg or foot injuries, combined with other injuries, had median hospital bills of $56,288.
Most states, including New York, have strict time limitations for bringing a personal injury action after a motorcycle accident. If you do not secure your rights within the applicable time period, you may permanently lose your opportunity to recover money damages for your personal injuries.
