If you have suffered a slip-and-fall injury, a speedy recovery is critical for your wellbeing. While the specific actions that you take will, of course, vary based on the severity and type of injury that you have suffered, as well as your doctor’s specific recommendations, the following considers some recovery tips to keep in mind.
1. GET A RIGHT DIAGNOSIS
Before proper recovery can even begin, it is essential to get the correct diagnosis. In order to get the correct diagnosis, be sure to take a trip to the emergency room (if the injury is serious) and schedule an appointment with your regular doctor. In some cases, you may also need to see a specialist. Describe the full range of symptoms that you are experiencing to your doctor, and do not leave anything out. Be proactive throughout the process – ask the doctor what he or she thinks you are suffering from post-slip-and-fall (such as a concussion, broken bone, strain or sprain, etc.) and what tests he or she will use to diagnose it.
2. DISCUSS RECOVERY STRATEGIES
Once you know exactly what it is you are suffering from, you and your doctor can discuss different recovery strategies. Depending upon the severity of your injuries, you may need to undergo surgery or another intensive treatment option. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe medication, or recommend a specific regimen to help you heal.
3. GET PLENTY OF SLEEP AND EAT RIGHT
Did you know that what you eat and how much you sleep has a direct effect on your body’s ability to heal? Not getting enough sleep is a stressor to your body. Further, wound healing is aided by the synthesis of protein and cell division, as well as tissue growth and rebuilding, all of which are aided by sleep (see: How Wounds Heal provided by U.S. National Library of Medicine).
What you eat greatly affects your body’s healing powers as well. In order to heal something that is damaged, your body sends certain white bloods cells to the area that protect the wound, fight infection, and oversee the repair process. However, if your body is tasked with fighting off inflammation in other parts of your body (due to poor diet), this process can be impaired. Further, your body will need collagen and protein to heal, so it is important you are eating both. The University of Rochester Medical Center provides an insightful summary of how wounds heal on its website.
4. FOLLOW YOUR DOCTOR’S ORDERS
Following a doctor’s orders is not always convenient or easy to do. However, following what your doctor says will be essential to your slip-and-fall recovery. Not only should you do what your doctor says, but you should also schedule regular follow-up appointments with your doctor – and actually attend them – to ensure that your healing is on track.
5. MANAGE YOUR SYMPTOMS
Different slip-and-fall injuries will be accompanied by different symptoms. It is important that you make efforts to manage these symptoms to improve your comfort throughout the healing process. For example, pain is a symptom of many slip-and-fall injuries. Discuss pain-management techniques with your doctor. While pain medications are often a go-to, you can also consider things like meditation and a fish oil supplements to help reduce pain. Hot and cold treatments, soaks, and massages are also ways that you may be able to effectively manage your pain. If you do decide to take a pain medication, be sure that you understand possible side effects.
6. TAKE IT EASY
Getting enough sleep and eating well are not the only two important things that you can do to help yourself recovery from a slip and fall. You can also take it easy. When you are injured, your body is expending a lot of energy trying to repair itself. You can aid it along the way by getting plenty of rest and living leisurely for a while. While you may hate the idea of being confined to your home or couch for a few days or weeks, remember that it may very well be exactly the thing that your body needs. Also remember that if you are able, getting up and moving around the house just a little bit – we’re not talking about walking miles here – may be beneficial. Being completely sedentary should be avoided unless you have no option.
Remember to do only so much as your injury allows. For example, if you have a concussion, playing sports even if you feel totally fine is not recommended. On the other hand, if you have a broken leg, you may be able to do some upper body training to help maintain muscle and improve blood flow.
7. GO TO PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL THERAPY
Your doctor may recommend physical therapy to help you regain mobility, stability, and strength after your slip-and-fall accident. Follow your doctor’s instructions. Physical therapy is one of the best things that you can do for your body.
But do not limit your healing efforts to attending physical therapy alone. In many cases, victims of slip-and-fall injuries suffer emotional and psychological injuries as well. This is especially true in instances where the victim is left with a serious impairment, disability, scarring, or disfigurement. When this is the case, do not hesitate to meet with a mental health professional to help you get back on your feet again.
