New York City Taxi Accident Attorney
Taxi Crash Injury Lawyer Serving Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Bronx
New York City has more taxicabs than any other American city. In fact, there are more than 13,000 medallion cabs on the streets of New York.
All those taxis mean there are a lot of passengers too. About 1.5 million people ride in a yellow cab each day in New York City, according to data from the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission.
Car accidents involving a taxi and another vehicle or pedestrian happen on average 10 times per day in New York City. Roughly 70 percent of those collisions result in personal injury or death. Those statistics could improve dramatically if taxi drivers, passengers, other motorists and pedestrians all obeyed the rules.
If you or a loved one has been seriously injured in a New York taxi accident, protect your rights by calling the New York City taxi accident injury attorneys at David Resnick & Associates, PC, for a consultation. New York City Taxi Safety Rules
Section 4-11 and other parts of the New York City Department of Transportation’s Traffic Rules establish regulations regarding taxi traffic safety. Here are some highlights:
- Taxis are allowed to “expeditiously” pick up or discharge passengers at the curb in areas where standing or parking is not allowed. The taxi must be within 12 inches of the curb and parallel to it.
- Taxis can stop next to a parked vehicle to pick up or let off a passenger if there is no unoccupied curb space within 100 feet of the pickup or discharge location.
- Taxis cannot pickup or discharge passengers in a crosswalk, in an intersection, alongside or opposite a street excavation, in a way that blocks traffic, where stopping is prohibited, in a bicycle lane or in a horse-drawn carriage boarding area.
- Passengers are not allowed to get out of a taxi from the side of the vehicle facing traffic; they must instead get out on the curb side.
